Lumu Baker Kawonawo: A Voice That Rose from the Wreckage
On June 30, 2024, renowned sports commentator Lumu Baker was at the peak of his passion, delivering live commentary for the thrilling Ssaza Gomba vs. Kyaggwe Masaza Cup match, where Kyaggwe handed Gomba a 2–0 defeat.
The day, however, took a tragic turn. While returning from the match, tragedy struck at Kabenje in Butambala. Lumu was involved in a devastating accident linked to clashes involving Kyaggwe fans. He was rushed to Gombe Hospital, then later referred to Bombo Military Hospital, where doctors fought tirelessly to save his life. The accident left him bedridden for 10 long months—a time that tested his strength, spirit, and faith.
But the voice that once brought football to life was not silenced.
In 2025, Lumu made a remarkable comeback to the airwaves on 103 Dunamis FM in Mukono, reclaiming his space in Uganda’s sports media landscape. He now passionately hosts two popular sports shows:

Lumu Baker Kawonawo, born Lumu Abubakali, on 9th - oct - 1999 .began his educational journey at Gospel Valley P/S in Kayunga , Bamukeezi infant sch wobulenzi, St Mary's P/S Kangulumira, Kangulumira Muslim P/s, Bbaale C/U P/s , Abaliddawo Junior school Bbaale, sat PLE at Misanga Primary School in Bbaale Sub-county, Kayunga District. During his primary school years, he exhibited early leadership qualities and served as Head Boy, setting the stage for a lifetime of dedication to leadership and public service.
He continued his education at Bbaale Secondary School in the same district, where his involvement in student governance and civic organizations flourished:
2017/18: Served as Mess Prefect
2019: Earned recognition as the Legendary Head Prefect of Bbaale SS
2019/20: Held the office of Chairman, Uganda National Students Association (UNSA) at the school
2019: Co-founded the Bbaale Muslim Students Association (BMSA), which remains active and influential
2019/20: Served as Chairman of the Patriotism Club at Bbaale SS
Following his secondary education, Lumu extended his leadership into the wider community:

Appointed Publicity Secretary for the Bbaale Parish Youth Council in Kayunga District
Family Background:
Father: Sserunkuma Badru, a police officer in the Uganda Police Force (UPF)
Mother: Nakimuli Mariam, a hardworking farmer
Media and Journalism Career: In addition to his grassroots leadership, Lumu has made significant strides in the world of sports media. He is a respected sports journalist and commentator known as “The Sports Philosopher.” He currently serves as a leading journalist for Ssaza Kyaggwe in the prestigious Buganda Masaza Tournament and holds the role of Media Officer at Latifah Mixed Secondary School Kabimbiri in Mukono District.
Lumu’s journey from a primary school head boy to a renowned media figure and community leader exemplifies resilience, civic responsibility, and an enduring commitment to uplifting others.
